29 year old Kristin Powell of Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court against Hollywood Tans and parent company SK Tans Inc., alleging the tanning salon failed to warn her of the increased risks of skin cancer from tanning bed use.

According to her lawsuit, Powell was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2009, which her dermatologist attributed to years of tanning bed use. Powell starting using tanning beds in 1998, at the age of 16, and used Hollywood Tans from 2005 to 2009.

An attorney for the plaintiff told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the tanning salon “failed to warn her of the risk of melanoma. In fact, they tried to promote it as a healthy lifestyle.”

The lawsuit said that “[t]here is no such thing as a safe tan from a tanning bed.” and that Powell has melanoma on her breast, left leg and truck area. The lawsuit also claims that “Hollywood Tans exaggerated and distorted the benefits of indoor tanning and failed to provide the proper health warning about UV rays.”

The lawsuit seeks damages in an amount over $25,000.
