While dozens of lawsuits are pending against Dutchess County orthopedic surgeon Spyros Panos, 100 lawsuits are being discussed but have yet to be filed by lawyers because of the lengthy research process involved in medical malpractice suits.

Panos is the defendant in 10 lawsuits that allege he performed surgeries but did not treat, or failed to properly treat his patients’ injuries. Panos’ former employer, Mid-Hudson Medical Group is named in nine of those cases also. Saint Frances Hospital is named in three of the ten lawsuits, and Vassar Brothers Medical Center is also facing lawsuits by Panos’ patients.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that between 2006 and 2011, nine medical malpractice suits were filed in Dutchess County Supreme Court against Panos, while the 10th was filed in Westchester County Supreme Court.

One of the lawsuits was filed because of an unnecessary surgical procedure that left the plaintiff with permanent nerve damage to her hand. Other allegations include that Panos was seeing patients and doing a relatively high number of surgeries each day.

One Queens attorney says that he has been retained by 77 clients who are filing lawsuits against Panos, and that another 50 patients are getting second opinions from doctors for lawsuit considerations.
