The last day to register with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is today, October 14, 2014 for first responders and survivors who were diagnosed with an eligible cancer on or before October 12, 2012. It is crucial for eligible 9/11 victims to register in order to preserve their rights, lawmakers said. The importance of registering by the deadline was emphasized in a recent press conference held by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Congressman Jerrold Nadler with community leaders, labor leaders and advocates of 9/11 survivors.

“Another deadline is drawing very near and those workers who were diagnosed with cancers before 2012 as a result of their exposures on Sept 11 and the months that follow will not be able to register and file a claim after October 14. Please help us get the message out now!” said Guille Mejia, Safety and Health Department Director District Council 37, AFSCME in a press release issued by Congresswoman Maloney and Congressman Nadler.

The VCF provides compensation to 9/11 rescue workers and survivors who became injured or ill due to the attacks. Exposure to toxins during 9/11 is linked to over 60 types of cancer and other serious conditions. Eligible individuals can register through the Fund’s website as www.vcf.gov. The website has a substantial amount of information about the registration process. The VCF FAQ page (www.vcf.gov/faq.html) has a list of cancers eligible for coverage. Compensation is available to those who were injured or ill from the World Trade Center, as well as the Pentagon and Shankesvilla, PA crash sites.

“First responders and community survivors displayed unparalleled bravery and courage on September 11, 2001, and in the weeks following, as they risked their lives to search for victims among the rubble and to return to their homes, schools and workplaces downtown. I strongly encourage those who have been diagnosed with cancer from exposure to Ground Zero during the aftermath of 9/11 to register with the VCF right away by going to VCF.gov. If you do not register by October 14, you will unfortunately not be eligible,” Congressman Nadler said in the release. “These brave heroes labored for weeks in the smoldering ash to clear debris and locate victims. The funds have already been designated for this purpose and it is imperative that as many responders and survivors as possible receive their just and deserved compensation.”
