South Texas Produce Distributor and Grower Linked to Listeria Outbreak
Date Published: Wednesday, October 5th, 2011
Frontera Produce, a South Texas produce distributor and grower, has been linked to the largest food contamination outbreak in over ten years, and has been named as a defendant in three lawsuits against Jensen Farms, the Colorado cantaloupe grower that is the target of the listeria outbreak, which has now sickened 100 people in 20 states, and killed 18.
Cheryle Ferda, a registered nurse who spent over two weeks in the hospital after being infected by listeria, filed one of the lawsuits. Ferda is still recovering. The two other lawsuits were filed on behalf of two men who died after being infected by one of the strains of listeria. One man was from Maryland, the other from Oklahoma.
Each of the lawsuits says both companies are liable for damages, and accuse each of negligence for introducing a contaminated product into the food market. A Jensen Farm spokesperson said that Frontera Produce is the “marketing arm” which helps find buyers, the Houston Chronicle reported.
