Sex Abuse Lawsuit against Roman Catholic Church Grows as More Victims Added

Eight more alleged victims from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in western Montana have been added to one of two lawsuits filed against the Roman Catholic Church alleging sexual abuse going back as far as the 1940s. The second lawsuit was filed by at least 80 Native American plaintiffs with similar complaints of abuse.

Many of the plaintiffs allege they were abused in church, school, orphanages and in their homes, and that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena knew or should have known about the abuse and stopped it, however, the plaintiffs say the diocese covered it up instead. The lawsuits accuse some 26 clergy members of being involved with the abuse.

The parties will be meeting with a mediator in November and are working to wrap up interviews with alleged victims prior to that meeting. Renee St. Martin Wizeman, spokesperson for the diocese said that adding more plaintiffs does not change the resolve of Bishop George Leo Thomas to settle the allegations, the Washington Post reported.

“This is part of the negotiated resolution that we are pursuing with the plaintiffs’ attorneys,” she said. “Bishop Thomas has a great interest in providing pastoral care to victims, and he is encouraging victims to come forward.” Mediation is also being sought in the second lawsuit.
