Product Liability Lawsuit Filed Against Propecia For Side Effects

Florida resident Eddie Sebastia has filed a lawsuit against Merck, claiming that side effects of  Propecia and Proscar caused him to suffer erectile dysfunction, testicular pain, decreased sex drive, depression and anxiety. Sebastia took the drugs from 1998 to 2008, and says they have ruined his sex life.

Proscar was originally developed to treat enlarged prostate, however it was later approved to treat male pattern baldness and marketed under the name Propecia. In March of this year, researchers in the U.S. linked the side effects of Propecia to loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced semen production and an increase in male breast tissue. The also found that some of these side effects could become permanent.

The lawsuit claims that Merck failed to warn doctors and patients about the potentially permanent sexual side effects of the drug, even though they were doing so in other countries. While Propecia and Proscar did carry some warnings, the lawsuit alleges the warnings carried in the United States were insufficient and understated the risks.
