Poster Lady for DePuy ASR Hip Implant Files Lawsuit

Penny Brown, a former gymnast who became the ‘poster lady’ for DePuy ASR hip implant, is joining a class action by over 300 UK patients against the manufacturer after she was told her hip implant had prematurely worn, and that she would need further surgery.

Brown agreed to advertise the ASR after she had the device implanted in 2004, to relieve her from the pain of arthritis. “I was advised to have the ASR resurfacing procedure rather than a total hip replacement on the basis that it would last much longer, be safer and reduce the likelihood of further surgery during my lifetime,” she said.

By 2009, Brown started to experience pain in her groin, and as the pain continued to grow, she turned to her physician for help. She was told that the ASR system was prematurely wearing out, and she needed to have another surgery.

A DePuy spokesperson said, “DePuy is committed to addressing reasonable and customary costs of testing and treatment for reasons related to the recall, including revision surgery if necessary, for Ms Brown and other ASR patients.”

DePuy issued a worldwide recall of the ASR system last year. disclaimer: This article: Poster Lady for DePuy ASR Hip Implant Files Lawsuit was posted on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 at 7:44 pm at and is filed under Medical Device Lawsuits.
