The parents of Jennifer Olenick, age 17, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Howard County Circuit Court, Maryland, against oral surgeon Dr. Domenick Coletti, anesthesiologist Dr. Krista Michelle Isaacs, Central Maryland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery PA, Baltimore, Washington Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center LLC, and Safe Sedation LLC (now named Aisthesis). The lawsuit alleges that doctors were negligent during a routine wisdom tooth surgery and failed to resuscitate Olenick after her heart rate slowed to 40 beats per minute and her body began to lose oxygen, the Baltimore Sun reported.

According to the lawsuit, the negligence of the doctors resulted in Olenick not having a pulse when emergency responders arrived at the scene, and caused her to suffer “massive and irreversible brain injury” that lead to her death 10 days later.

Olenick’s mother, Cathy Garger, said her daughter’s death was needless, and that she is “trying to make people aware that a routine visit to the dentist or an oral surgeon can turn out anything but routine.”

The five count lawsuit includes one count of negligence, one count of failure to properly inform the involved parties about risks of the procedure and the dental techniques involved, two counts that negligence caused her parents to lose the “love, support, guidance, advice and comfort,” of their daughter, and one count that negligence caused Olenick’s parents to incur “dental, surgical, medical, hospital, pharmacological, funeral, burial, and other losses and expenses.” The lawsuit seeks an amount of damages exceeding $30,000. disclaimer: This article: Parents File Wrongful Death Lawsuit after Daughter Dies from Dental Work was posted on Monday, December 19th, 2011 at 9:18 pm at and is filed under Medical Malpractice Lawsuits.
