Only 20% Medical Malpractice Claims Result in Settlement

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine is the most comprehensive study of medical malpractice claims in over 20 years, according to the Cleveland Leader.

The study says each year one in 14 doctors get sued, and that nearly all surgeons face at least one malpractice lawsuit during their career.

The study also says that only a small fraction of patients harmed by medical mistake actually file claims and that doctors and insurers win most of them.

The study looked at date 41,000 physicians who bought coverage between 1991 and 2005, also found that some types of physicians get sued more than others, including 19% of neurosurgeons and heat surgeons.

Pediatricians pay higher claims than regular doctors thought, averaging more than $520,000 per claims as opposed to $275,000 by other doctors.
