Ohio Nursing Home Called One of the ‘Worst’ Senior Centers in the U.S.

A nursing home located in Deer Park, Cincinnati, has been labeled as one of the worst senior care centers in the country.

Three separate inspections of the East Galbraith Health Care Center in 2012 revealed twice as many deficiencies than the statewide average, Cincinnati.com said.  The most serious infraction involved a female resident with dementia who was sexually assaulted by a male resident who also had dementia. The health care center failed to report the attacks in a timely manner.

An October 2012 inspection found that the center did not have a registered nurse on duty at all times of the day and night, as required by regulation, Cincinnati.com said. The inspections also uncovered that at least one patient was not given the correct dosage of medication prescribed for depression.

The center is owned by Cleveland-based Provider Services. If improvements aren’t made, the facility could lose its ability to accept new Medicaid and Medicare patients, Cincinnati.com said.

The East Galbraith Health Care Center was one of 36 facilities in the U.S. that was added to the federal government’s “Special Focus Facility” list last month, Cincinnati.com said. The list now includes more than 130 nursing homes. It monitors the progress of nursing homes that have been found to provide sub-par care over a three-year period. A single incident doesn’t land a health center on the list; instead, it’s repeated history of a high number of infractions over a longer period of time that leads federal regulators to place certain facilities on the list, Cincinnati.com said.
