Nine cases are being readied for bellwether trials in the New Jersey NuvaRing consolidation. Over 125 NuvaRing lawsuits have been consolidated in Bergen County under Judge Brian Martinotti. The judge has not specified which of the nine lawsuits will be heard first; however, he does expect all nine to be ready by February 4, 2013. A second set of ten cases are scheduled to be heard in February 2014.
Some 800 federally filed NuvaRing lawsuits have been consolidated to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri under Judge Rodney W. Sippel, however there have been no trial dates set in that MDL. Judge Sippel has requested alternative dispute resolution plans be submitted by both parties before the start of any federal NuvaRing trials.
According to the lawsuits, NuvaRing has caused plaintiffs to suffer serious side effects related to the NuvaRing birth control device including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, and heart attack.
According to a report published by the Food and Drug Administration, researchers have found that NuvaRing users were 55 percent more likely to suffer blood clots and venous thromboembolism events, then women who used older birth control pills.
