An attorney for the numerous U.K. victims of the alleged phone hacking scandal perpetrated by News Corp journalists has said that he intends to take legal action against the company in the United States. The attorney said he expects the initial hearing to be held in New York in two to three months.

“We have been speaking to U.S. lawyers to make applications to U.S. courts in order to assist the investigation of this matter and are looking to pursue legal action on the basis of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in the United States, whereby a holding company can be liable for practices outside the jurisdiction where the offence is said to have taken place,” the attorney told CNN. “Proceedings will be issued in the U.S. where we will seek information from the company’s directors about those issues and about corporate governance.”

Among the victims seeking the lawsuit is the family of Milly Dowler, a missing teenager who was found murdered. Public outrage over allegations that Dowler’s voicemail was hacked by the company before she was found caused News of the World to be shut down.
