John Doe 116 has filed a lawsuit in the Twenty-First Judicial Circuit Court of St. Louis County against the Marianist Province of the United States, Chaminade College Preparatory School, and Father Martin Solma over allegations that Rev. Louis Meinhardt sexually assaulted him and other students for years.

“Defendants failed to stop Meinhardt from engaging in that behavior or to notify children attending the school and/or their parents of Meinhardt’s propensity to sexually assault juvenile boys,” the complaint states. “As a result, Brother Meinhardt was allowed unlimited access to juvenile boys, with the aid of defendants Chaminade and Marianists.”

According to the lawsuit, the abuse was so prevalent that students attending the school called it the “Meinhardt treatment” and that students also called the Rev. Meinhardt “the kissing coach” and “Screwie Louie” because of his habit of telling students to “let me pat you on the bo-bo,” and to “come here and give me loving.”

In the lawsuit, Doe said Meinhardt would watch the boys shower and grab their genitals, and that Meinhardt fondled his penis and genitals during a “private tutoring session.” Doe says that Chaminade and Marianists know about the abuse, but failed to stop or prevent it. The abuse allegedly started in 1966, when Doe was in the seventh grade.

The lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress and medical and psychological treatment, and demands a jury trial.

Solma reported that more than twelve former students have come forward with allegations of sexual and verbal abuse by Meinhardt and Rev. John Woulfe, both of whom are now deceased.
