Long Island Vet’s Mother Files Lawsuit over Suicide

The mother of Iraq veteran Bartholomew Ryan has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Nassau County, NY, alleging the East Meadow jail was negligent in their care after her son hanged himself to death in his cell.

According to the notice of claim filed by Parker Waichman LLP on behalf of Ryan’s mother Lilyann that despite knowing Ryan was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and drug addiction, the defendants failed to monitor, supervise, and care for the vet. Raymond Silverman, Ryan’s attorney with Parker Waichman LLP, said “The family is ultimately doing this because Bart served his country and was let down the system as a whole, and by a county that was supposed to keep him safe. What happened at the Nassau County Correctional Facility has been a civil rights crisis that is taking place right in our backyard,” Newsday reported.

Ryan was jailed February 23, on $5,000 bail for misdemeanor DWI charges. He was found dead the next morning after apparently using his bedsheet as a noose.

Bartholomew Ryan is the fifth inmate to commit suicide in the jail within the past two years. At the time of his death, Ryan was 32.
