Key Ignition Problem Prompts GM to Issue 44th Vehicle Recall This Year

On Monday, General Motors (GM) announced that it would recall 3.16 million midsize and large cars to modify their ignition switches to avoid a replay of the problems that sparked a recall of 2.9 million small cars in February and March.

The faulty ignition switch has been linked to 13 deaths and 54 crashes. GM says it is aware of eight crashes and six injuries tied to the vehicles involved in the current recall, according to USAToday.com.

The most recent recall involves the 2005-2009 Buick Lacrosse, the 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, the 2000-2005 Cadillac Deville, the 2004-2011 Cadillac DTS, the 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, the 2004-2005 Buick Regal LS and GS, and the 2006-2008 Chevy Monte Carlo.

Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to remove everything from their key ring until GM can attach an insert that fills a slot on the head of the key and leaves only a small hole for the key ring. Until the automaker can fix the problem, the ignition switch can move out of the “run” position if the key is carrying extra weight and is jarred, shutting off the engine and disabling the air bags, USAToday.com said.

GM has launched 44 recalls this year for a total of 17.73 million U.S. vehicles. That’s 20 million vehicles, if you include Mexico, Canada, and other countries, USAToday.com reported.

GM CEO Mary Barra appeared before Congress Wednesday and was asked what steps the automaker is taking to resolve the safety crisis. Barra said an uncapped fund would cover all the victims who died or suffered a serious injury, as well as families of victims who died, according to NBCNews.com.

The company is facing a lawsuit filed in Riverside, California, seeking compensation for millions of car or truck owners for lost resale value, potentially exceeding $10 billion. Barra said the fund set up for the victims and families would not cover lost resale value, NBCNews.com reported.
