A Pennsylvania jury has awarded a breast cancer survivor $400,000 in a medical malpractice lawsuit.

In 2004, after finding two masses in her breasts, Carol Renna was referred to Bethlehem Pennsylvania physician, Dr. Mark Schadt who performed a fine-needle aspiration biopsy to check the masses for cancer. The results were negative.

In 2005 Renna underwent a second fine-needle aspiration biopsy, and the results were positive for cancer.

A later excisional biopsy which removed the cysts and tissue around them, found Renna had stage III invasive carcinoma. A month later, she underwent a radical mastectomy on her right breast, and a simple mastectomy on her left.

Carol Renna filed a medical malpractice lawsuit alleging that her doctor should have followed the initial biopsy with more complete biopsy that would have used a larger sampling of tissue.

The Northamptom County jury agreed and awarded Renna $400,000.
