Blue Bell ice cream tainted with listeria has sickened five people in Kansas, killing three.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that five patients who had been “in and out” of a Kansas hospital became infected with listeria bacteria after eating tainted Blue Bell ice cream products while staying at the facility. Four of the patients consumed milkshakes made with a single serving of Blue Bell’s Scoops ice cream, according to the Los Angeles Times (LA Times).

The affected products were produced on a single production line at the Blue Bell Creameries plant in Brenham, Texas, officials said. Listeria bacteria were found in Blue Bell’s single-serving Chocolate Chip Country Cookie Sandwiches, No Sugar Added Mooo Bars, Sour Pop Green Apple Bars, Great Divide Bars, Vanilla Stick Slices and Almond Bars, the company said in a statement viewed by the LA Times. The outbreak prompted Blue Bell’s first-ever recall.

“This withdrawal in no way includes our half gallons, quarts, pints, cups, three-gallon ice cream or the majority of take-home frozen snack novelties,” the company said.

The listeria bacteria causes a condition known as listeriosis, which triggers symptoms including fever and muscle aches, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems. It is typically treated with antibiotics, according to the LA Times.

Illness onset dates range from January 2014 to January 2015. The affected Blue Bell ice cream products were found to contain four rare strains of listeria, three of which were detected at the company’s production plant in Texas. Health departments in South Carolina and Texas also found listeria in certain Blue Bell products, The Washington Post (The Post) reported.

Pre-packaged caramel apples were linked to an outbreak of listeria earlier this year. Thirty-two people were sickened, and 31 of them had to be hospitalized. A pregnant woman also miscarried due to the illness, according to The Post.
