Milton Ploghoft of Athens Ohio  has filed a lawsuit against Casa Lopez in Athens County Common Pleas Court alleging that his wife’s death was caused a salmonella infection that she got from eating a meal at the restaurant.

The lawsuit claims that the Ploghoft’s ate at the restaurant on April 30, 2010 with their son, and that Zella and the son became very ill. Their son recuperated, however Mrs. Ploghoft was admitted to an area hospital and tested positive for salmonella. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Mrs. Ploghoft was later admitted to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, before being admitted to a nursing home. She suffered a stroke on May 17, and died June 22.

The salmonella outbreak occurred from April 29 to May 5 2010 and the Athens City/County Health Department reported an estimated 56 people had salmonella symptoms after eating at Casa Lopez.

Gastrointestinal symptoms generally begin in as little as 12 hours after salmonella infection, and recovery can take days. Salmonella infection can cause serious illness in those individuals with compromised immune systems, including death.

An attorney for Casa Lopez said that the restaurant settled six claims before they reached court. Two more lawsuits, including one lawsuit filed by eight plaintiffs are pending.
