What was once the top selling diabetes drug in the world is now facing hundreds, and what lawyers believe will soon be thousands, of lawsuits after the FDA and European Medicines Agency issued warnings about the link between Takeda Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd., type 2 diabetes drug, Actos, and bladder cancer.

Bloomberg reports that Takeda halted sales of Actos in Germany and France under pressure from regulators, however American and European sales continue, though doctors have been warned against prescribing Actos to anyone who has or has had bladder cancer.<!–more–>

Actos has also been linked to heart failure as well as other serious side effects.

The FDA has analyzed date from a Takeda safety study and has found that patients taking Actos have a 40% increased risk of developing bladder cancer after taking the drug for at least one year.

Dr. Harlan Krumholz, professor at the Yale School of Medicine, who also directs the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation told Bloomberg, “It’s not clear if this (bladder cancer) risk is real,” but Actos and Avandia both are linked to heart risks, weight gain and possibly bone loss and fractures, he said. “The consensus already is that (Actos) should only be considered … after patients have exhausted all other options.” He also said Actos needs more long term study. disclaimer: This article: Hundreds Of Lawsuits Filed Against Actos was posted on Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 7:42 pm at and is filed under Defective Drug Lawsuits.
