35 Houston area women have filed a lawsuit claiming that Nexium maker AstraZeneca was aware of the bone deteriorating side effects of the drug but failed to warn consumers and physicians about the dangers.

In the lawsuit, the women say they have suffered broken ribs, ankles and feet because of Nexium, which is often prescribed to treat heartburn and acid reflux. Janice Allen, 62, said of the fractures,  “I’ve had two in the left, one in the right foot, two ribs and now my left ankle. ” She continued, “You’re not getting to really participate in anything, and I have grandchildren, you know. And I want to take them to the park, and you can’t do those things. I’m terrified that I may have my next break.”

The FDA issued safety alerts about the drugs like Nexium and increased risk of bone fractures, and has since mandated new warning labels, but Allen said they came too late for her. “It really makes me angry,” Allen said. “And they didn’t warn me, nor my doctor.”

AstraZeneca issued the following statement regarding the lawsuit. “AstraZeneca is confident in the positive benefit-risk profile of Nexium as demonstrated by extensive clinical trial data and safety surveillance data.” disclaimer: This article: Houston Women Unite To File Lawsuit Against Nexium was posted on Thursday, May 26th, 2011 at 7:47 pm at and is filed under Defective Drug Lawsuits.
