Attorneys for an unidentified man have filed a lawsuit in Honolulu Circuit Court alleging that the plaintiff was sexually abused by Rev. Gerald Funcheon during an overnight retreat in the 1980s, when the plaintiff was 13-years-old. At that time, Funcheon was a teacher and chaplain at Damien Memorial School, an all-boys Catholic school.
The clergy abuse lawsuit alleges that despite reports made to the order of the Crosier Fathers and Brothers Province, Inc. regarding inappropriate sexual conduct towards children, Funcheon was given “unsupervised and unlimited access to children at Damien.” The lawsuit also alleges, “Before plaintiff was sexually abused, the Crosiers had serious concerns about Funcheon’s interactions with children, Funcheon’s sexuality and Funcheon’s abuse of alcohol and prescription drugs.”
The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount in damages.
