72 people from across the country have come together to file a lawsuit in St. Clair County, Illinois against Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Sanofi Aventis over the drug Plavix, which they say caused them to suffer heart attacks and strokes.

According to the complaint, Plavix allegedly causes internal bleeding, blood disorders, stroke, heart attack and even death, though the drug companies touted Plavix as a “super aspirin” that more effectively prevents heart attack and stroke while being safer and easier on a patients stomach than a daily dose of aspirin.

The FDA has warned Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi on numerous occasions regarding their marketing information which misinformed doctors and their patients regarding the efficacy and safety of the product. The lawsuit says that the “result is that physicians are prescribing Plavix to people who could be cheaply and effectively protected against ischemic events by a simple aspirin, to pay approximately $4.00 a day for a dose of Plavix.” The suit also says that aside from their exaggerated marketing claims, the drug manufacturers failed to adequately warn consumers about the dangers of the drug, and that “Despite the growing body of scientific knowledge that the four-dollar Plavix pill was not much better than a four-cent-a-day aspirin, Defendants kept promoting it to the public and to physicians, using hyperbole and outright falsification in the process.”

Because of this, plaintiffs say they have suffered permanent and severe injury including heart attack, stroke, stent replacements, excessive bleeding, physical impairment, physical pain, suffering, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life, and incurred medical costs, the Madison Record reported.

The lawsuit seeks economic and compensatory damages, plus costs and attorney’s fees, as well as any other relief the court finds just. disclaimer: This article: Group Files Plavix Injury Lawsuit in Illinois was posted on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at 9:21 pm at and is filed under Defective Drug Lawsuits.
