Four lawsuits have been filed against DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., DePuy Inc., DePuy International, Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Inc., Johnson & Johnson Services, Inc. and Johnson & Johnson International, Inc. Three were filed  in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and one in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas.

All four lawsuits were filed on behalf of plaintiffs whose DePuy ASR Acetabular Hip Replacement Systems failed. DePuy recalled the ASR Hip Replacement Systems in 2010 due to the high rate of failures. The ASR metal-on-metal system has also been associated with concentrated levels of metal ion in the blood.

The British Orthopaedic Association recently published a report stating that the six year failure rate of the DePuy ASR might be as high as 49%. DePuy has identified loosening, misalignment, infection, bone fracture, dislocation and pain as reasons for the failure of the device.

As more than 90,000 ASR Hip Replacement System devices have been implanted worldwide, 700 federal cases have already been filed, and the number of lawsuits associated with the DePuy ASR recall is expected to grow.
