A Los Angeles based law firm has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, DePuy Orthopedics Inc., and an LA-based orthopedist, Thomas Schmalzreid, one of the hip replacement device designers.

Last year, DePuy issued a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular Systems and its ASR Resurfacing Systems due to an abnormally high failure rate. The British Orthopedic Association released a report in March stating that the failure rates are as high as 49 percent in six years, and 21 percent in four years of using the DePuy hip replacement devices.

The metal-on-metal hip replacement system have also been reported to shed metallic debris into the body. The FDA says that anyone with a metal-on-metal hip device should pay close attention to symptoms including chest pain, numbness, change in urination habits, and shortness of breath, Wave News reported.

Nearly 93,000 people have received the DePuy ASR hip replacement devices. disclaimer: This article: DePuy Facing Los Angeles Lawsuits Over ASR Hip Replacements was posted on Monday, October 3rd, 2011 at 8:56 pm at and is filed under Medical Device Lawsuits.
