Daughter Files Lawsuit against Pfizer over Zoloft

Angela Rife has filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Pfizer Inc., over birth defects Rife says were caused by her mother’s use of Zoloft while she was pregnant with Rife.

According to the lawsuit, Rife was born with multiple congenital birth defects and that the birth defects were caused by the antidepressant Zoloft. Rife’s lawsuit claims that Pfizer knew that Zoloft posed serious risks to unborn children, and failed to warn physicians and patients about the risk of serious birth defects. Rife also claims that Pfizer failed to properly test the medication, and that the manufacturer is still hiding information from patients.

The lawsuit alleges careless breach of duty, fraud, misrepresentation, and negligence, and seeks $75,000 in actual damages as well as punitive damages “in a fair and reasonable amount to deter Pfizer and others from engaging in the wrongful conduct,” The Madison St. Clair Record reported.
