Tamara Layman and Leo Gonzales of Blue Island, Illinois, has filed a lawsuit in Will County Court against Hollywood Casino Joliet and its hotel after finding bed bugs in their room.

Before filing the lawsuit, Layman asked the hotel to reimburse her for the doctor visits, lost property and a ruined weekend, but, the Sun Times Media Wire reported, she had no success. “I’m having to replace things that I never should have had to replace,” she said.

According to the lawsuit, Layman and Gonzales checked into their room, put their luggage in their room and then went to the casino. They returned to their room that night and went to bed. That was when Layman noticed a bug on her pillow. They took the bug to the front desk of the hotel, and an employee offered to give them a different room. When they went back to their room to collect their belongings, they pulled the sheet back and found red bugs running across the bed.

The lawsuit says that when they returned home, Gonzales found bite marks on Layman’s shoulder. A doctor later confirmed she had been bitten by bed bugs. The hotel manager also confirmed the bed bugs.

The couple threw out everything the brought to the hotel, including the luggage. 17 days later, the hotel sent an exterminator to their home for inspection. The couple wants the hotel staff to offer future visitors instructions on how to handle bed bugs, to keep them from bringing them home.

The lawsuit seeks reimbursement for doctor visits and the personal items they had to dispose of, and replace.
