Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Actos Manufacturer in Canada

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, distributor and manufacturer of the diabetes drug Actos, and Eli Lilly, former manufacturer and distributor of the drug, alleging the companies failed to disclose to physicians and consumers that taking the medication longer than one year significantly increased the risk of bladder cancer.

The lead plaintiff of the class action lawsuit is a deceased Toronto woman who died from bladder cancer after using Actos. “Given the other widely available alternatives to control Type 2 diabetes, my mother never would have taken Actos had she known that it would increase her risks of developing bladder cancer,” said her daughter in a release, as reported by CBC News Health.

Actos is a type 2 diabetes drug that has been on the Canadian market since 2000 and continues to be sold in the country, though French and German health officials halted sales of Actos after studies showed an increased risk of bladder cancer. In the US, the FDA issued a requirement that the drug’s label indicate that patients who use the drug for longer than one year face a possible increased risk of bladder cancer.
