California Investigating Medtronic Infuse

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The California Attorney General has issued a subpoena to Medtronic over the controversial spine product, Infuse. According to a regulatory filing, Medtronic has received several subpoenas in connection with the product.

The issues surrounding Infuse include allegations that Medtronic paid doctors kickbacks and royalties if they used Infuse in ways that regulators had not approved. Also, a panel of spine experts reviewed 13 studies paid for by Medtronic for Infuse, and found that authors who had financial ties to the company reported 10 to 50 times fewer complications with Infuse than were found in FDA reports and other documents. Complications that include male sterility, infection, inappropriate bone growth, and cancer, the Star Tribune reported. Congress launched an investigation into Medtronic spinal product and whether side effects of the product were underreported.

Medtronic has also received a letter from the Justice Department requesting information related to its practices regarding replacement of insulin pumps for Medicare patients.

The Star Tribune also reports that at least four whistleblower lawsuits have been filed against Medtronic by former employees, alleging the company paid doctors for being loyal to the brand with exotic trips, lucrative consulting packages, and agreements that earned some physicians millions in royalties.
