Black Swan Interns Sue Fox Searchlight Over Unpaid Wages

Interns Alex Footman and Eric Glatt filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court alleging that Fox Searchlight Pictures violated minimum wage and overtime laws by hiring interns. The lawsuit is seeking class action status for the more than 100 unpaid interns that served on various Fox Searchlight productions.

According to the lawsuit, Fox had the interns do menial work that did nothing to educate them about filmmaking, and which should have been performed by paid employees, as labor rules require a certain type of educational experience must be given for an intern to be considered an exempt employee.

“Fox Searchlight’s unpaid interns are a crucial labor force on its productions, functioning as production assistants and bookkeepers and performing secretarial and janitorial work,” the lawsuit says. “In misclassifying many of its workers as unpaid interns, Fox Searchlight has denied them the benefits that the law affords to employees.”

The lawsuit seeks back pay and an injunction barring Fox Searchlight from using unpaid interns improperly, the New York Time reported.
