Arkansas Fracking Lawsuit Claims Well Water Contamination

A class action lawsuit has been filed in Arkansas against Southwestern Energy over hydraulic fracturing gas drilling.

A lead lawyer in the Arkansas class action said the suit started by a family whose water well turned into a gas well because of fracking. “The water well next door to their house began to spew methane. So much so that they ended up putting a flare in the person’s backyard,” he said.

In light of the Arkansas lawsuit, as well as suits in Pennsylvania, communities throughout New Brunswick are talking about whether the province has strong enough mining rules.

Those involved with the Arkansas lawsuit are questioning whether the rules are being followed, and how much or how little “we know about what is being done to the earth when you hydraulically frack rock.”

The Arkansas class action lawsuit against Southwestern Energy was filed last week, and asks for millions in damages.
