Accutane Side Effect Lawsuits Exceed 3,000

More than 3,268 people joined the consolidated mass tort litigation in New Jersey, where Accutane manufacturer Hoffman-La Roche is headquartered. The serious side effects of Accutane use has prompted millions of dollars to be paid to victims who used the acne-fighting medication.

Serious side effects of Accutane include –

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease)
  • Birth Defects including cleft palate, heart problems, brain deformity, infant death
  • Depression and Suicide

Less serious side effects include –

  • Hair loss
  • Headache
  • Eczema
  • Joint pain
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Menstrual problems

Health problems due to the side effects of Accutane can go on for years after discontinuation of use.

Andrew McCarrell, a computer technician in Alabama was initially awarded $2.6 million for his lawsuit, however, Hoffman-La Roche appealed, and the court awarded McCarrell $25.16 million in compensatory damages.

Hoffman-La Roche has paid out more than $45 million to patients who have suffered side effects, and may be facing more than $1 billion in awards and settlements as more lawsuits continue to be filed.
