5 Sexually Abused Altar Boys Settle With Catholic Diocese of Trenton

Lawyers for five men, all former altar boys, have announced that the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey, and the victims have reached a settlement agreement of more than $1 million for the sexual abuse Father Ronald Becker inflicted on them during the 1970s and 1980s. Becker died in 2009.

The Diocese said it found the allegations made by the men to be credible, and asked that any other victims come forward. One of the five men involved in the settlement said that he was molested about 150 times. An attorney for the men said that Becker would “tell them it was a physical act that would show the love of God.”

The Washington Post reported that each victim will receive $200,000 plus $25,000 more to cover therapy costs for the next two years.

A spokesperson from the Diocese said that the first complaint against Becker was lodged in 1989, and the church removed him from the ministry. The church sent him for medical treatment, then gave him a desk job away from any children. In 2002, Becker was defrocked. Becker’s niece also accused him of abuse. He died before he could stand trial, and the church settled with the niece for $300,000.
