Jordan Chaikin, partner with Parker Waichman LLP, along with the Alvarez Law Firm, and the Paige Law Firm issued a statement that Dorothy Alexander has been awarded $20 million against Lorillard Tobacco Company for the wrongful death of her husband, Coleman Alexander, a 40-year smoker.

Through her attorneys, Mrs. Alexander proved that her husband was addicted to nicotine containing cigarettes, and that his addiction was the legal cause of his death. Mr. Alexander died in 1995 of small cell lung cancer as a result of his addiction to cigarettes, including the Kent brand of cigarettes made by Lorillard Tobacco Co.

The jury also found that negligence, defective and unreasonably dangerous cigarettes, and Mr. Alexander’s reliance on statements made by the tobacco company which omitted information regarding the health and safety of their product, were all legal causes of his death, and that Lorillard was 80 percent responsible for his death.

The jury also found that Mrs. Alexander is entitled to punitive damages, and that trial is set to begin next Tuesday in Florida’s Dade County Circuit Court.
