BBC News has reported that over 100 lawsuits have been filed in the UK against DePuy over serious health effects allegedly caused by the DePuy ASR hip replacement system. Patients have complained of nerve, muscle, and bone damages, as well as swelling, and blood poisoning.

Stephen Ellis, 57, of Liverpool had a hip replacement in 2005, and said he “woke up one morning and I was in agony. And I felt sick, really sick with the pain.” Ellis fears the loosening of the hip replacement may have led to bone and muscle poisoning. “I feel like an old man, that’s what I feel like, an old man in his eighties. And I feel robbed of life,” Ellis said.

Another man from Liverpool, Norman Sherrington, had a DePuy implant six years ago, but had to have a second operation because of continuing pain. “If the hip was really bad I’d have to go down on all fours,” he said.

Others have reported serious psychological effects because of the faulty hip replacement device, including feeling suicidal.

DePuy issued a statement that said, “Since the recall decision was made, we have worked to provide patients and surgeons with the information and support they need.

“DePuy is committed to addressing reasonable and customary costs of testing and treatment for reasons related to the recall, including revision surgery if necessary.”

DePuy voluntarily recalled the ASR implant, which used a metal cup and socket, but said the recall was not related to concerns over the safety of the product. The company said the recall was instead because of, “declining demand and to allow the company to focus on developing the next generation hip technologies to better meet the needs of patients and surgeons.” disclaimer: This article: 100 DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits Filed in UK was posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 9:06 pm at and is filed under Medical Device Lawsuits.
